Although I worked in the area for several years, it wasn’t until late last year that I finally paid a visit to the magnificent London Shard thanks to a tasty experience lunch at Hutong restaurant. But did it live up to expectations?
The deal
Named after the famous Hong Kong restaurant Hutong, the Shard’s version is a treat for all the senses and offers an exciting menu of northern Chinese cuisine. Take the lift up to the 33rd floor and soak up the stunning view up above London Bridge and spanning the London skyline. The decor of bamboo screens and red Chinese lanterns sets the scene nicely.
Booked through Truly experience, our lunch voucher included a glass of bubbles and a 4 course dim sum sharing menu. This experience cost £39.00 per person.
Unfortunately there was a mix up with our booking leading to an additional wait time for a table. After the concierge confirmed our new lunch time, we settled in at the bar with a not so shabby view of the Thames to pass the time. It is also possible to book a bar table and order snacks from the bar menu if you don’t have time for a full meal.
An hour later, our table was ready and our first course arrived and fortuately, all was but forgotten after the first bite.
The taste-test
My foodie highlights were the shrimp and kimchi dumpling and Sichuan style crispy bass fillet.
Also worth mentioning, although the voucher was offering a set menu, the restaurant substituted one of the dishes to cater for our dietary requirements.
The food was filling and delicous and you certainly feel well looked after by the friendly Huton staff. Far too full to finish, the final course of sweet and sticky rice cake was boxed up and taken home. Probably my least favoute dish of the day but since I was most excited to try the savoury courses, this wasn’t an issue for me.
The review?
Booking hiccup aside, the food was delicous and lunching up above London was definitely an experience. If you’re a fan of dim sum and have an upcoming special occasion, Hutong’s experience lunch at the Shard is definetely a contender!
